24/7 TV

here is the code for this project.

i made a my own custom 24/7 tv with a raspberry pi and an old crt.

the idea came from casey neistat’s studio. i remember watching his vlogs and seeing a monitor in the background always playing old movies. i thought it was kinda weird and wondered how it worked.

notice the monitor in the back playing a movie.

mkbhd's setup tour video

in a mkbhd setup tour he mentions having a monitor that loops the godfather I and II.

from what i remembered i thought it was something more sophisticated, like an actual tv system running in the background. turns out it was just a screensaver.

but i still wanted to build something real, more like a tv station running nonstop with stuff i liked.

the first version was coded pretty simply: just using vlc to play videos on a loop randomly. but i wanted to make it more custom and more tv-like. so i added things like a tv static simulator, transitions when switching channels, separate channels, logos, and even a little web app to control it.

i also designed my own logos and edited custom transitions because the ones on youtube weren’t good enough.

once it was running, i filled it with legally downloaded movies and shows, plus my favorite stuff: old disney movies, cartoon network shows, anthony bourdain, diners drive-ins and dives, random documentaries, and even early 2000s commercials to make it feel more authentic.
